BanditGangwere

My name is bandit. I am a systems engineer, mainly mission-critical embedded systems, device drivers, and data acquisition systems.

I have been a consultant since 1991, after I quite my job at Seagate, got married, broke my knee, no health insurance, and my new wife pops up pregnant. What else was there to do but become a consultant?

Overall, I have been fairly successful, with a mix of 1099 and W-2 client, working on a great variety of projects.

I did 1.5 years in a start-up (Ono-Sendai) in 1992 thru 1993. I would like to see a panel on the mistakes to avoid when joining a start-up, ie if the start-up has (or does not have) this, it is a good or bad start-up.

Two personal notes: I have one hand, thus the "one-armed" bandit. I love fresh groups to, um, "spring" my bad off-handed (sic) puns on ... "My parents wanted 1.95 children", "Gave up my left arm to be a two-fisted drinker", etc.

The other note: in "Secrets of Consulting", Jerry gives credit to a "Sherby" for the idea. I am son of "Sherbie" - the very same one, although Jerry got the spelling wrong (but a good guess).

I am looking forward to this conference. I am also looking for CrashSpace.

Bandit,

Some of my best friends are punsters. I guess I'm about as used to it as I'm going to get. ;-) I've been known to throw a metaphorical pillow in their direction, but I think we've all survived so far. ;-)

Actually, I think I'm jealous. I can get an occasional good one off in email and newsgroups but I can't seem to think fast enough in person to get the good ones before someone else does. I do groan loudly and painfully, though. :-)

The startup panel is a great idea. If someone sets up a StartUpBof, I'll sure try to be there. - JerryWeinberg 2004.09.28
