BookFairJerry: I was conversing with Dick Karpinski about AYE and his desire to promote Jef Raskin's new book, and he wrote: Dick: I don't want to sell books, though Raskin's is a true gem, but more usually the ideas they contain. Perhaps as you arrange for hallway conversations, there could be a selection of books shared in some lounge. You might even invite participants to list their favorite books which enhance ones effectiveness and bring one or two to share. Start early enough and the list can build up on your web site and even spur some questions, answers, and reviews as nucleating motes. Jerry: I LOVE this idea. I will add it to the wiki web for registrants, where these culture-building ideas are accumulating. Then I'll let it develop as it develops - we can certainly provide facilitating space, time, etc. Dick: Perhaps an evening session devoted to as-it-were how-to books might be planned to serve as a focus for the book list activity, without actually restraining the bounds of the ensuing discussions. It is easy to see ways such a meeting could be a flop, but who knows what might come of it if things happened to click. Any sense in those ideas? Jerry: A lot of sense. I'm putting it here on the wiki so the participants can develop this idea. I'll also create a BookListPage so people can post their favorite books - perhaps the ones they intend to bring to the book fair, whatever form it takes.
