Designing, Using and Benefiting from Non-Quantitative Metrics
NaomiKarten and BobKing
When you use Quantitative Metrics:
- proceed with caution
- remember that they show only part of the picture
- counting without analysing is risky. Test the metric early.
- ensure that the metric is worth the time it takes to collect the data
- measure the cost of producing the metric
- you may lose value in roll ups
- find out what changed
When you use Non-Quantitative Metrics:
- watch your own reaction
- Conflict metric - if there is / appears to be no conflict where there should be some, pay attention to why
- listen to what is said formally VS informally
- watch body language
- what kind of laughter do you hear?
- watch out for too much drinking, both the amount and the timing
- watch for signs of too much delivery food
- watch for "Do Not Erase" whiteboards left for a long time. Why is nothing changing?
- pay attention to the gut feel that the people have, especially if it conflicts with your Quantitative Metrics. If there is a conflict, check the QM data.
- listen to the noise level
- have a friend help you when you won't be available or able to focus.
