Designing, Using and Benefiting from Non-Quantitative Metrics
NaomiKarten and BobKing

When you use Quantitative Metrics:

  • proceed with caution
  • remember that they show only part of the picture
  • counting without analysing is risky. Test the metric early.
  • ensure that the metric is worth the time it takes to collect the data
  • measure the cost of producing the metric
  • you may lose value in roll ups
  • find out what changed

When you use Non-Quantitative Metrics:

  • watch your own reaction
  • Conflict metric - if there is / appears to be no conflict where there should be some, pay attention to why
  • listen to what is said formally VS informally
  • watch body language
  • what kind of laughter do you hear?
  • watch out for too much drinking, both the amount and the timing
  • watch for signs of too much delivery food
  • watch for "Do Not Erase" whiteboards left for a long time. Why is nothing changing?
  • pay attention to the gut feel that the people have, especially if it conflicts with your Quantitative Metrics. If there is a conflict, check the QM data.
  • listen to the noise level
  • have a friend help you when you won't be available or able to focus.
