My wife, Gail, and I would like to take a few days after the conference to experience a little of Arizona. I know little about the area, and am drowning in detail trying to read up on it. Suggestions are highly welcome! -- GeorgeDinwiddie

Indian ruins

I'd really like to visit a cliff dwelling, not from a distance as required at Montezuma's Castle, but walking inside it to empathize with the former inhabitants. Tonto National Monument sounds like a good possibility to me, though I worry that Gail may not be able to negotiate the path to it.

Art

We're interested in both traditional and contemporary art. Soupy (errr... SuePetersen), assures me that this is a wonderful area for art.

Now George, behave yourself or I'll introduce Gail to some of my jeweler friends. <wide g>

Sedona is really nice. If you have the time, think about Chaco Canyon.

<> gives some information on accessibility at Montezuma's castle. Walnut Creek, if you're going to the Meteor Crater, is another ruin, but defintely not very accessible if Gail has any trouble getting around. It's a steep walk down and up.

A little further along Interstate 40 is the Painted Desert and the Petrified Forest, both National Monuments (or Parks) and both incredible. You can make a nice loop out from Phoenix to see Grand Canyon and all these other things, if you have time.

And, there are many other fascinating things--too many to mention, but check the web for what interests you, like old mining towns, cowboy things, plant life, Frank Lloyd Wright, ... - JerryWeinberg 2005.08.28

Welcome to AYE, George. I recommend visiting the Grand Canyon. Regardless of the weather or time of year, it's always inspirational. And take a few hours to stop by the Meteor Crater on your to or from the canyon. SteveSmith 2005.08.27 [moved here from GeorgeDinwiddie]
