SessionThree009

but I've never done anything like this before!
Dwayne Phillips

Description

Imagine you are at work, and a person who you respect asks you to do something unexpected that is different from anything you have done before. The task is far outside your experiences. What is your response? Do you blurt out, "but I've never done anything like this before!" Do you say that to yourself? Are you still breathing?

This session will explore the feelings, thoughts, and actions that occur when confronted with an unusual or unexpected situation.

Learning objectives: At the end of the session, I hope the participants will be better able to say,

  1. I am not the only person who has ever been asked to do something different and unexpected.
  2. I can accept what comes with trying something different and unexpected.
  3. I can say no.
  4. I am able to ask myself why I would or would not want to try something different and unexpected.
  5. I can be congruent when I am in a different and unexpected situation.

Prerequisites: Willing to participate in different and unexpected situations, but not sight unseen. Everyone participant will be told the situation and have the choice of saying yes or no.

Minimum number of people for your session to "work": 4

Maximum number of people based on your plan for the session: 20

Constraints/ Logistics

Chairs for everyone. At least one table that will accommodate four people. At least one blank wall. One stack of 3x5 cards. One stack of 5x7 cards. Three legal pads. One pad of 5x7 sticky notes

Track/ Audience: Personal Effectiveness Track

Dwayne, I'm in charge of buying supplies, and I know the session is about "I've never done this before," but I've never bought 5x7 cards before. 5x8, yes. 5x3, yes. So, help me out, please. Show me what to do. JerryWeinberg 2003.05.30 (and, no, I'm not going to cut one inch off each card - maybe you can do that as an exercise)

P.S. How many cards in a stack?
