TipsForAyeGoers

With AYE 2004 fast approaching, it's time to collect some survivals tips from AYEs past, and add some new ones:

  • Stay hydrated. Phoenix is high dessert, and the air is dry. Take advantage of bottled water when it appears, and consider an early trip across the street to the mini-mart to buy a few bottles of H2O.

  • Bring chapstick. The high dessert air will dry out your lips.

  • The sun shines in Phoenix, even in November. If you're fair-skinned, suntan lotion might not be a bad idea.

  • 3x5 cards are a great way to capture notes and thoughts. Bring a few, or scavange some at the conference. Bring spare pens; being caught short is no fun.

  • Before you pack, imagine yourself at the conference, and fill in "I'm sure glad I didn't forget to bring ___________."

  • Dress for comfort. AYE is a low-key conference.

Phoenix is desert, but it can still get cold! I'll never forget how I froze the first year! I always bring something to layer now. :-) The hotel doesn't turn the central heat on until it gets VERY cold, but they do have space heaters they will loan you for the room.

All of the above advice is good, even though Phoenix is not high desert, but just desert. Just so you know. - Jerry Weinberg 2004.10.24
