JudyCushingI'm now teaching at an "alternative" undergraduate liberal arts institution. I teach mostly software engineering, database systems, computer science for nonmajors (where I try to attract non-likely students to CS). I went to academia after twelve years in industry, to help solve what i saw as a disconnect between what students learn in college and what they do on the job. After seven years in academia, my industry experience, as good as it was proved inadequate. I faced serious burnout and depletion of intellectual capital. So, I went back to graduate school, and earned a Ph.D. ion CS&E at Oregon Graduate Institute -- my research agenda is data infrastructure for scientists. Many of the barriers are socio-political, rather than technical. In my teaching, I am looking for ways to actually teach teamwork -- I've been evaluating students on the quality of their teamwork for years, and am just now thinking that i might be able to teach it. That's why I'm coming to AYE.
Home Page You are certainly coming to he right conference. I always learn a lot about teamwork at this conference. I suggest that you look up DavidSocha he has tought some very interested experiential CS courses in the past and was able to intetgrate many speakers from AYE into the curriculum. You will find that many of the consultants here have worked with David on his class. I am not sure of who they all were but there was a large number so if you ask around I sure they would be egar to help.(I think SteveSmith was one who worked on it, but he is facinating to talk to about teamwork in any case. Ask him about how he runs his meetings! Oh look he has a page about his experiance teaching the class TeachingInexperiencedPeople) I see you are from Oregon, I will hunt you down (in a friendly way of course) during AYE and tell you about some of the cool people in that part of the country who could not make it to AYE this year but you might wish to look up and chat with. I hope you do not mind, I found your home pages and put somelinks to them on this page. KenEstes 2003.10.24 Wecome, Judy. You have a lot of people at the conference with college teaching experience of the kind you're looking for. I'm one of them. Let's be sure we get to exchange views. Maybe we can round up others to join us for one of our fine buffet lunches. - JerryWeinberg 2003.10.24
