LookingForWikiService

I am looking for a free or low-cost wiki service. I will be teaching a community class and would like to have a wiki for that class.

Does anyone have experience with such a wiki service? Any recommendations for or against a service?

Who does the wiki service for AYE?

Any other information appreciated.

Dwayne - this is not a recommendation, just the results of a quick search which came up with http://wikispaces.com. Try to find some others.

I don't know what's generally available, but I run wiki software on my server (http://www.idiacomputing.com/). I could set up an instance for you there. Is this a short-term or a long-term need?

As an alternative, most simle domain hosting services and even many high-speed connection services come with "hosted" space and the ability to run various software on their machines. This is not an endorsement - Earthlink has a variety of packages of this type that are not unreasonable. Also not an endorsement - I went with SpeakEasy for my provider. You tend to get deeper tech support for higher prices and more restrictions on deployment. Try SpeakEasy first, I'd say. Finding a sweet spot in hosted collaboration services seems to be a bit of a challenge for the vendors. Several interesting offerings haven't gotten enough business to persist. For example, Bloki, which is a hosting, web-site, Wiki, Blog hybrid.

Installing & running a Wiki appears to be pretty easy. At my last gig we put a Wiki in place. Since network ops wouldn't help us in any reasonable way, we cannibalized an obsolete develoment desktop and had MoinMoin (Python based. Supported mainly out of Germany) up in a couple of calendar days, about 1/2 day of effort. A decent high-speed connection will let you serve from behind your firewall, or you can do the setup on hosted space.

It's on my list of stuff to do, eventually.

GeorgeDinwiddie and I hooked up with some side conversations and things look good.

I had so much good fortune with that request that I will venture another one. See FiveInchFloppies
