JimBullock

I am interested in InterestingBooks, NorthWestCooking and SystemsThinking. Also AsparagusGrowing.

  • AYE-2003, maybe. One contract with an e-stuff infrastructure / services company & negotiating with a web information marketplace vendor serving a narrow vertical. Thus, I'm not sure I've learned much about picking my employers<g>.
  • AYE-2002, made it. This year was blessedly dot-com free. For a TripReport from JimBullock on SEM2002 go to JimBullockTripReport.
  • AYE-2001, nope. Madness at Amazon.com. This was the year they were supposed to run out of money and in some ways might as well have.
  • AYE-2000, nope. Madness at Harris Interactive as they negotiated the transition to a web-based polling infrastructure and pretty much ran out of money.

At AYE-2002 I met a bunch of folks I've "known" through correspondence, some for several years. I see lots of them in the GuestBook for AYE 2002. I'm a significant contributor to the ShapeForum, and co-editor of the RoundTableBooks, derived from it. Each time I've met one of these e-friends, it's been pretty cool.

Of late, I've been getting in increasing rate of unsolicited inqueries for consulting or similar work a sufficient number of which are turning into RealDollars that I might have a viable business here. I've even begun doing the odd workshop-y thing to be followed, I think, by maybe figuring out how to do a workshop-y thing. It appears that I am in danger lately of becoming one or more of: a SuccessfulConsultant, a PersonalChef, or a burden on society.

I am noticing that often organizations, especially those in transition, spend several years mucking about before hiring people with a track record of getting things done (that would be people like me.) Often, however when this hiring takes place, several things are true:

  • They're out of money.
  • The confused people remain "in charge."
  • After several years not shipping something, shipping right now this week is your problem and the delay your fault.

I have at least learned to administer "dedication tests" when offered a "fix this" assignment and my price for it has gone up (way up.) Meanwhile my price for gigs that make sense has actually gone down. We'll see how this approach works out.

BioOfSorts follows, written for TwoZeroZeroTwoSem which turned out to be fun. I've transplanted a few things from the SEM site to here since I haven't asked that bunch about deep linking and other acces-y things. Find me here:

Or I'll look forward to meeting you at AYE. More on that here: http://www.ayeconference.com/

Welcome, James!
I see you haven't forgotten batch processing economies of scale in your initial flood of entries!

  • Have a look at InterestingCurrentThreads for a bunch of leads through the Wiki.
  • There are quite a number of pages suffering from too much concentrated xNFP and in need of more rants.
  • Take a look at the BookListPage for the itch mentioned. Not everything is found via InterestingCurrentThreads pointers.
  • Explore ... let us know if you fall off any cliffs!

Hi Bob,

Thanks for the note and the pointers. As for rants . . . Moi? Why whatever do you mean?

So, I'm curious about SellingWhatYouDo. I thought I'd start a page and see what happens.
