EarlySwimI have no idea whether the pool at the hotel is good for swimming. But if it supports it, I'll probably be ploughing up and down the pool in the morning to help start the day fresh. Huw. I have done exactly what you suggest in the past, though last year was cooler than expected, so I didn't swim as much but jogged more. Note though, that I am not much on laps. I just did four. Though sitting in the jacuzzi next to the pool just after at 7am sure felt good. MikeMelendez 2004.10.06 Cold water makes you swim faster. :-) What size is the pool? -- HuwLloyd 2004.10.06 Is there anywhere nice to run? -- Claire 2004.10.06 The pool is large and quite suitable for early morning swimming. You will likely find me inelegantly but doggedly ploughing back & forth every morning. Other years I've had it all to myself. I guess I'll be sharing it this year! It is perhaps a little too warm, but as the air temperature is cool at that hour I haven't found it a problem. FionaCharles 6-Oct-2004 Be careful everybody. At home in Canada, Fiona swims with icebergs in the water. - JerryWeinberg 2004.10.06 Here's a picture I took of the pool last year. It's circular but not very deep. The stacked walls on the far side are a fountain. On the right is a closer picture of the fountain with a couple of AYE'rs. Fiona, would you post a picture of the icebergs? Please forgive me, Claire. I just noticed your question. I ran from the hotel and looped through the neighborhood behind it for about 1.5 miles. If you go a little further there's a golf course with Cave Creek winding through it, but I've only seen that on the maps. The major roads are wide, fast and dangerous. They break the area around the hotel into slightly larger than half-mile squares. Inside those squares are quiet neighborhoods. Cave Creek might be an interesting place to run, if we're allowed down onto it and it isn't raining. I suspect it is only a wash. MikeMelendez 2004.10.08 Thanks Mike, I reckon from sight that its about 30 metres in diameter.
We could put a plastic iceberg in the middle for Fiona, it might save the odd collision... obviously the pool wasn't designed for swimming in mind. It looks fine though, I'm more concerned about catching too much sun. :-) Mike, I have a suitable iceberg photo and would happily post it, but I've never mastered the technology to do so. I think I would need a website (which I don't have) and can't just cut & paste the digital image? FionaCharles 8-Oct-2004 Fiona, These pictures are links onto my family website. I don't know how to upload an image unto the wiki. It might be possible, but I suspect the bandwidth is better used for our discussions. I'd be happy to post it there for you, if you would email it to me: melendez-at-alum-dot-mit-dot-edu. MikeMelendez 2004.10.11 Fiona has supplied an image, which I've shrunk for net speed and placed between the two Phoenix pool pictures above. The sign on the back of the wooden structure says, "VICTORIA BEACH: When lifeguards are not on duty swim at your own risk." Fiona noted in the email with the image, "Here's the iceberg photo -- or at least the best I can do at short notice, icebergs being in somewhat short supply in the Great Lakes in October." Thanks, Fiona, MikeMelendez 2004.10.11 Huw sent a picture of his pool. That's it on the left. I think you can just make him out. To show it is his, I think the one of the right is of him (I've yet to meet him). I can see why he was concerned about the size of the hotel pool. Thanks, Huw, MikeMelendez 2004.10.12 *blush* Well he does look like me, and the grin looks familiar. I have been sporting a goatee beard for a year now though. I love water. Speaking of water, I was reading about lake Powell, in Arizona, drying up - I don't want to swim that badly that we consume all the natural water reserves. You won't, Huw, though doubtless the guests in all the hotels (us folks!) contribute to the problem. The palace-owners roundabout will probably consume most of the reserves watering their silly out-of-place lawns. FionaCharles 12-Oct-04
