EarlyYoga

As of April I'm (BrettSchuchert) just a Yoga practitioner. By the time I attend AYE 2004 I'll have begun Yoga Lifestyle/Teacher training so I'll have a little background in leading a Yoga experience but I certainly will not be a certified Yoga instructor.

My inclination is to do something like I practice about 3x a week. Begin with basic breathing exercises, a little side and back stretching, then into Salutes to warm up. Continue by using vinyasas to move between poses. Move to some floor work and finish with savanasa (corpse pose).

If you are interested in joining me, feel free to do so. However you'll be responsible for your own body and I intend to practice, not teach, Yoga.

In Yoga each individual is responsible for their own body. The instructor I work with always says to listen to your body and what it is telling you. CharlesAdams 2004.04.22
I've noticed lately I seem to break easier and take longer to heal. Being responsible for my body seems reasonable. DonGray 2004.04.23
I will be very happy to have a joint practice in the morning even if we do different asanas. CharlesAdams 2004.04.28

Brett, when do you arrive? I will be at the Hotel for a Sunday morning session. CharlesAdams 2004.08.23

Charles, not sure yet. Depends on if I plan to take a 2-day SW photography class the following week. If I do, I'll drive. If not, I'll fly. As we get closer, I'll figure out my schedule.
Right now I'm planning on checking in on Sunday, so I may be out for early yoga, but maybe later on in the day. 09-08-2004
If you are planning on attending, could you provide some idea of the kinds of yoga you have practiced, or a description of a typical practice (activities, length, anything you think might be important).

Alternatively, CharlesAdams suggested simply getting together and each doing our own practice. Since I've not set out to do that, it sounds interesting.

Brett, The practice you describe above sounds very similar to mine. I usually practice for about an hour. JasonRogers 9-13-04
Brett,

I would be very willing to do the same practice in Early Yoga. I am a beginnger with a little over a year of practice. We typically practice one and one-half hours every week. We start out with meditation, do the asanas, end with savasana, we review what we learned during the practice, we end with a reading. The link to the school I go to is: <http://www.omahayoga.com/>

We are doing:

  • Forward Bend
  • Downward Facing Dog
  • Warrior
  • Cobra
  • Vinyasas -- Warrior/Triangle & Sun Salutation

I am still developing my own practice to use between sessions.

Sounds similar to what I practice. We start with breathing, then move to simple back bends (by extending our chest up rather than actually bending the back - this hits the thorassic spine).

We often continue with the following:

  • Half Moon Series (Ardha Chandrasana Series)
  • Varieties of Salutations (between 7 and 13)
  • (Sometimes balancing)
  • Five star then into a hip stretch
  • Triangle
  • Warrior 2
  • Lateral Angel
  • Cobra
  • Bound angle
  • Several things I don't remember the name of
  • Plow

My instructor also practices Pilates and so often brings in other influences. She's big on hip and pelvis flexibility.

We conclude with savasana.

Total time per session 1 - 1.5 hours. Typical time to hold a pose (when not just moving between) is from 5 - 10 breaths. .sometimes longer.

I've also just started a 200 hour teacher certification program so I'm very keen in discussing yoga as well as practicing it.

If someone brings a Pilates machine, I might actually get up and participate. - JerryWeinberg 2004.09.20
