GrandCanyonExcursion

The Grand Canyon is a magical place.

Jerry Weinberg and I are taking an excursion to the Grand Canyon National Park (South Rim) on Friday, November 8. Jerry will be returning to Albuquerque rather than Phoneix. I'll have a rental car and will return to Phoenix on Saturday, November 9. It's a 3 - 4 hour trip each way. If you would like to join the excursion, I have room for three people.

The first three people to sign up on this page can ride with me. If you have your own car and are willing to transport others, please post details here.

I hope you can join us.

Jane and I haven't made our flight and hotel reservations yet, so we could extend our trip to do this. I don't remember the Grand Canyon, and my wife has never been, so we would be interested. We can coordinate with you and others whether to share a car or rent another car.

I am considering. The Grand Canyon holds special memories and it is hard to resist a trip with special friends.

I would need to return to Phoenix.

I would love to see the Grand Canyon. I've never been. I will need to return to Phoenix also.

IraWeinstein asked that I post his name for the Grand Canyon tour for car planning purposes.

For those who are planning on returning to Phoenix, when are we doing this? If we drive to the Grand Canyon Friday are we driving back to Phoenix on Friday night or Saturday? I'm open to either as long as I can make a Saturday flight from Phoenix at 12 noon. Then there's issue of finding a room for Friday night somewhere.

Any thoughts?

Mapquest says driving one-way is 4 hours... I assume we leave Phoneix Friday, November 8 in the morning. Those who return to Phoenix would leave the Grand Canyon on Saturday, November 9 (AM/PM).

I took a look at Orbitz.com for hotels.
  • The Holiday Inn Express Grand Canyon listed is closest to the park entrance and has a "great rate" of $62.25 if you book through Orbitz.
  • The Rodeway Inn Red Feather is a few miles further and is $55.24. listed as business rate (and the other rate is higher).

For those of us going, should we agree on a hotel to keep the driver(s) from having to run a taxi service in the morning? What do you think? Are we taking two cars or will one car hold the six of us returning to Phoenix ... assuming there are seven of us total (and Jerry will be headed north).

Either of the hotels is OK with me. Has anyone stayed at one or the other and can advise us? I am planning to ride with Jerry on the way to the canyon, but I'll need a ride back to Phoenix. Since we will all have our luggage, we probably can't get six of us in a car unless we rent something big like a van. We could all chip in towards renting it, be together on the way back, and have enough room. Just a thought. My flight leaves Phoenix after 5pm on Saturday.

Rebecca

I have no experience with either hotel. Having been to the Grand Canyon I know there are many hotels lining the street befor the "Park Entrance". Personally, I am okay with anything.

Yes, we should think about vehicles. I am willing to drive up with anyone who has signed up for the trip north. In one expedition I did from Phoenix to the Grand Canyon we stopped periodically (lunch, photo ops, pit stops, etc...), ...each time we stopped we changed car membership in a somewhat random way. That was fun and both spread and integrate our experience for the day.

I talked to Ira Weinstein today and he and I are on an America West flight back east that leaves Phoenix at 12:50 or so (close to 1PM). I wonder if we are the "early birds"?

I plan to come along for this Grand Canyon trip. I'll be looking to share a car. See you all soon. - DavidSocha
