Enhancing Your Personal Influence: From Novice to Maestro
AdrianSegar 2003.11.8
- Avoid multiple choice questions - use open-ended questions rather than offering solutions
- Pick up on body language; keep eyes at same level during session
- Living timeline of employees
- "If this project was a car, what kind of car would it be?"
- Ask metaquestions:
- What questions should I be asking you that I haven't asked?
- What would you like to ask me?
- What are you doing here?
- How did you get here?
- How do you feel about being here? (can ask at different times)
- What would you like to have happen?
- Hesitating before completing your question - client finishes your question and reveals...
- At the start of a meeting - make contact!
- Avoid framing problem definition as a solution idea
- Someone is stuck on what you think is an inappropriate solution. "That's an interesting solution idea. What problem would that solve?"
- Don't assume you have to help
- As an observer:
- Write it down so you don't forget it, & let it go
- Give yourself specific tasks
- # of questions answered vs # of questions asked; < 1/3 - trouble
- Timing: don't necessarily bring up what you observe right away, look for the right time. Sometimes someone else will bring it up and you can say "I think that's a good idea"
