SuperShuttle

From AYE 2001 (?) :

Four of us were on the same SuperShuttle. The driver on delivery asked us all to pay. I noted that the ride was supposed to be free for AYE attendees. He then switched to a reduced price. So, I produced a printed copy of the AYE Super Shuttle web page. He finally relented and noticed that AYE rides were paid for on his charges sheet. If this happened to more than one group, this probably should be noted as a potential problem somewhere, as the hotel recommends the Super Shuttle as well. I suggest that it should be mentioned to the hotel and Super Shuttle management just before the next AYE -- MikeMelendez

Mike - thanks for the heads up. We did have multiple problems just like the one you described. In all the cases that I heard of, the shuttle drivers did eventually relent, as happened with you. I am sorry that you were put in that positon. We worked with the hotel regarding this during the conference and BeckyWinant is dealing with this now as she negotiates with the hotel for next year.

One thing I did notice is that SuperShuttle is a large organization which is spread throughout the southwest. They appear to be good at handling the normal situation and very bad at handling exception cases. Our case was an exception for them. -- BobKing

We had the same problem. We showed the Super Shuttle man at the airport the paper. He read it and nodded. Arriving at the hotel, the driver -another person- charged us twelve dollars each . Though I was confused, I was also too tired from the travel and so I paid (and added a 15% tip of course). I phoned Eduard, who still had to fly in from another part of the country the next morning. Obviously since we had to pay anyway, he could hunt for a cheaper way, and I had noticed the hotel itself had (own) shuttles too. Eduard ended up using a cab company. In conversations with AYE hostesses the next day I verified whether it was supposed to be free or not, and heard it must have been a "mistake" by Super Shuttle. Becky gave me an empty receipt, so I can at least put the expense in my bookkeeping and I don't end up paying for it privately. I assigned the value that we, as foreigners, had let ourselves been "taken for a ride" (again ;-).

So I'm glad this comes up. We weren't the only ones! I do hope AYE didn't pay too for these rides. We did. I do not mind. Happended then, and I learned from it. And knowing Becky is on it, I feel even better. Maybe AYE is entitled to a refund. --NynkeFokma

We will not have the same arrangement with Super Shuttle this year, but we may have some sort of arrangement. Apparently the option of Free was beyond their normal arrangements and some drivers refused to believe it existed. So whatever arrangement we have will be clearer for everyone. Stay tuned.

The first year we had a ride board on the wiki and I believe this is a good idea for 2002. It's nice to meet people here ( on the wiki) then get to see them in person and talk on the ride from airport to hotel!

I'd be interested in any other comments for improvement you might have about the hotel, food, rides, or other logistics, as that hat's on my head this year!
