WhatMotivatesYouBranching from the TheBonusEffect page ... I searched the wiki pages, and did not find a page about "What motivates me". Specifics have been mentioned in various pages (money [worked for me], interesting assignmnets, normal time to explore things). Please list here motivates you. DonGray 2005.08.20 Pleasing Dani. Being worthy of her love. - JerryWeinberg 2005.08.20 Although I don't like admitting it, I am often motivated by -- Emergencies, especially when I'm told that I am the only person with the skills necessary to resolve the problem. I have learned how to say, "No." But me saying no means that I have thought through the problem and where it's likely to go rather than that I'm unmotivated by its initial possibilities. Another motivation that I am reluctant to admit -- I get motivated when I see someone bully another person. That's a hook for me. And I have to be careful with my response. SteveSmith 2005.08.21 Both money and interesting assignments motivate me some of the time, but my big motivator is training or any opportunity to learn. A few years ago, I worked for a an executive with imagination in a consulting company. When they needed overtime, I was offered money or time off. I responded that the government took most of the money and I had trouble using my vacation time. When asked what I wanted, I said extra training (I did get some). That extra training time is what brought me to AYE the first 2 years. After that, I was contracting. The biggest factor that keeps me contracting is complete control of the training budget. SherryHeinze 2005.08.21 True to my Myers-Briggs preference, I like interesting problems to work on that stretch my understanding. I would also be motivated by money being allocated so I can go to workshops and seminars of my choosing. CharlesAdams 2005.08.22 Thank you for reminding me, Sherry and Charles. Like you, the thing that motivates me the most is learning. In my earlier entry, I must have been in another world and thinking about events that create a reaction in me. SteveSmith 2005.08.22 Some of the things that others have mentioned -- the opportunity to learn by trying new things, for sure. That's the principal reason I love being in services: every project has something new, and in some it's all new to me. Training courses are good too, but learning by doing works best for me. Working with really bright and capable people is an important motivator for me, whether they're the people I work for, peers, or my own team. And then there's the one I'm reluctant to admit (because it exposes the stress junkie in me): deadlines. -- FionaCharles 13-Aug-2005
