SatirGlobalNetworkAVANTA was founded in 1977 by internationally famous family therapist, Virginia Satir, as a forum for the continual evolution of Satir theory and practice, its practitioners, and the world community. AVANTA has members in over 20 countries, with 12 Affiliates and Institutes on five continents. AVANTA operates from its headquarters in Burien, Washington. It is governed by a voluntary 9-member board, and is designated a 501(c)(3) non-profit organization. We have been fortunate; Avanta has had the funds to support many important projects over the years. Much good has and is being accomplished all over the world. We were hurt programmatically and financially, like much of America, when the stock market took a dive a few years ago and after 9/11. However, the simple truth is that although Avanta has made cost containing decisions many times, we have never generated sufficient revenue to cover expenses, since Virginia's death. We know, however, that the treasure that we were left was not her money but her teachings. If we want future generations to know of this legacy and to share in its development, then we must mobilize. Now we have chosen to pursue an active strategy committed to increasing Avanta's visibility, inclusivity, diversity, and worldwide impact. Moving forward we will support initiatives that can be self-sustaining and that can be scaled to increasing numbers. This approach offers us the only real opportunity for revitalization and positions us for other post 2007 scenarios. Starting in 2005, the Annual meeting (now called the Annual Satir Conference) will have more emphasis on training. We will extend invitations to members of our kindred organizations (IHLRN, Affiliates, Institutes, Family Camp, Consultants Camp, AYE conference, Web of Wisdom, and others). WE will do what is necessary to ensure that the Conferences generate a profit so we can celebrate Virginia's 90th birthday in 2006 and hold the 2007 Conference in Prague. We have a compelling mission and a shared legacy equal to the task. The world needs Avanta, and Avanta need you. So what can you do?
Perhaps the greatest tribute to Virginia is for each of us to embrace the power and tenderness of how she and or her teachings touched us, and to translate that into everyday action that promotes her model. We are aware of the challenges and the possibilities inherent to Avanta. Growing Avanta into the healthy system that our world needs requires that its board, membership and staff grow towards more wholeness and maturity. We welcome that opportunity. We hear the call. We see the vision, and we want you with us. JeanMcLendon 2005.03.07 Satir Annual Conference, July 29 -August 1, 2005, Waterloo, Ontario, Canada SteveSmith 2005.03.08 Jean talked to some of us at AYE in November about what she hopes to accomplish as president of Avanta. Quite a few of us expressed an interest in helping and some of us have become actively involved as Avanta members. Those of you who have dealt with Avanta before or who saw the copies Jean had in November will notice changes in the Membership Form on the web site. Avanta will vote by mail at the beginning of May for 3 new board members. Any one who becomes a member before the election can vote. As you might expect, there is a membership fee. Many of you know Eileen and Wayne Strider from AYE 2000 and 2001, from PSL, from Satir Systems Congruent Leadership Development Workshop, from Leaders Forum, .... Eileen is running for the Avanta Board. I can't think of anyone as qualified to help Jean grow Avanta into the kind of organization she envisions. I hope you will support her. SherryHeinze 2005.03.07 After meeting Jean McLendon at AYE 2004, I immediately joined Avanta. I have been reaching out to Avanta members in my area just to get acquainted, and to ask for their support as I practice the use of Satir models in my own work. I get a lot of energy and ideas from these conversations, and look forward to expanding my personal network of Avanta friends and colleagues. And I hope to see some AYE friends at the Avanta conference this summer. StuartScott 2005.03.10 HI Stuart and Sherry, I am sitting with Steve Smith in Seattle learning how to navigate wiki. I'm sure looking forward to being with you this summer at the Satir conference and then in November for the AYE. JeanMcLendon 2005.03.12 Hi, Jean, We will look forward to seeing you on the WIKI more often. SherryHeinze 2005.03.13 I am so happy to be hearing that many of our AYE folks are joining Avanta and coming to the summer conference in Ontario, Canada. There will be more information soon about Avanta's Annual Satir Conference. But I can give you pre-published information. Sharon Loeschen, author, professor and therapist will do an all day workhop on developing healty relationships. This program will be a precursor for a trainer certification program that Avanta is establishing under Sharon's guidance. It may be the kind of program that you would like to be certified to present and for sure it will give attendees lots of useful information and design ideas. John Banmen, author and internationally acclaimed teacher of the Satir Growth Model will do a half day demonstration working with a star and then a debriefing. Laura Dodson, author and Jungian analyst is offering a combined experiential Satir/Junian personal development workshop. Eileen and Wayne Strider are doing a half day workshop on changing organizational culture using the 7 P's which I conceptualized some few years ago. Steve Buckbee and colleagues is presenting the Satir Mandala in a half day workshop. These workshops are running concurrently over the course of the two days and there are many shorter time slots available for open space and B.O.F. possibilities. Let me know if you have questions about joining and or attending the summer conference in Ontario, Canada. Please join within the next month so that you can vote in our upcoming election of three new board members. This is my first solo flight into wiki....open to feedback. Jean Mclendon 2005.03.18 jmclendon @satirsystems.com Sounds like the hard part will be deciding what I want to do the most. I am really looking forward to the conference. It will be great to see Eileen and Wayne and Marie again too. SherryHeinze 2005.03.20 Sherry,
It really is going to be exciting. I understand that you will have hard decisions to make, much like with our AYE experience. Jean, it's the custom on the wiki to date your entries, like this. JerryWeinberg 2005.03.23 (and, leave the space out of your name, as JeanMcLendon. That makes a link to your own page, should someone be inerested.) Jerry, I noticed that my name didn't turn blue. Just got some coaching from Steve Smith and Sherry Heinze and now you. So I'm practicing, now that I'm over some of the chaos of deciding that I wanted and needed to learn how to wiki. Don't know if that's how you talk about wiki or not? How does this look? Jeanmclendon 2005.03.26 JeanMclendon 2005.03.26 Well, I see that I'm still doing something incorrectly. Maybe when I check this time, I will have my name entered as a link. Got my fingers crossed. JeanMcLendon 2005.03.26 Maybe I needed to cap the L in my name. If this doesn't work then, I need more coaching. Yes, Jean, you do need to cap the L, so that the two names are identical, even as to capitals (and spaces). So, JeanMcLendon is the one form you should use every time. - JerryWeinberg - 2005.03.26 Jerry, I am excited to be at the Avanta board meeting. Steve Smith will visit with the board to give more voice and light to ideas that need good technology for Avanta to move forward. Yes, I know technology is only part of the answer. Wish you too were here, but your counsel to me makes a positive difference. JeanMcLendon - 2005.03.30 The idea of being in Seattle with you and Steve really excites me. The idea of being at another Avanta board meeting doesn't. - JerryWeinberg 2005.03.31 Jean McLendon talked to some of us at AYE 2004 and 2005 about what she hopes to accomplish as president of Avanta. Quite a few of us expressed an interest in helping and some of us have become actively involved as Avanta members. Many of you know us. We both attended the Avanta conference last summer, and found the experience extraordinary and powerful. We were so moved, in fact, that both of us are now running for seats on the Avanta Board. We share with Jean and many others high aspirations for the future of Avanta. Avanta exists to encourage the creative use, sharing and ongoing development of the Satir Growth Model. The Growth Model is not just a set of concepts for therapists. It is a way of being, a way of relating to yourself and the world. It is a way of amplifying your effectiveness, starting at your core. We see enormous value in sharing the Satir growth model with people in all walks of life, and we see Avanta as a means to do so. Avanta members will vote by mail starting May 25th for 3 new board members. Anyone who becomes a member before the election can vote. We ask you to join with and support us. SherryHeinze and StuartScott 2006.05.03 We're very excited and not a little relieved to be able to let fellow AYErs know that we've managed to secure JeanMcLendon to lead a two-day Personal Development Workshop on September 11th and 12th in The Great House at Sonning-On-Thames, Berkshire, England and is being run not-for-profit. The reason for this posting is that we now need sponsors to ensure that this event is a success - and in return we can offer links from the workshop website to yours, logo and publicity in the workshop material, waiver of conference fees (depending on the level of sponsorship), etc. If you are able to sponsor the event, or know of someone in the community who would be able to, please contact either of us at Of course, if you're also interested in attending we would love to hear from you at the same email addresses. You can find some more details at PersonalDevelopmentWorkshopUk On the banks of the River Thames, The Great House at Sonning, in it's four acre estate, nestles in the English countryside. Yet only 30 miles west of London, it is within easy reach of both Heathrow Airport, mainline railway stations, & good motorway links. PhilStubbington 2006.05.14 SusanStubbington 2006.05.14
