SundayDiversions

Is anyone looking for Sunday diversions? I'm not signed up for the Sunday warm-up tutorial, and am interested in exploring around Phoenix. I wasn't planning to rent a car, but would if I could share expenses, or I'd share expenses on someone else's for the day.

One notion I had was to go to Taliesin West, since there won't be a group tour this year. Another was the Phoenix desert botanical garden, which is supposed to be excellent. (I don't think they grow asparagus, though.) Other suggestions? -- FionaCharles 20-Sep-02

I'm interested in Taliesin West... -- LaurentBossavit 2002.10.27

I'm interested in Taliesin West, and riding with a group sounds more fun than not. Sunday I want to meet with Nynke, Becky, Laurent, at some point, but a tour diversion may help get travel-distorted little gray cells recharged and more productive. -- BobLee 2002.10.27

Taliesin West is worth seeing. I just bought a several books about Frank Lloyd Wright buildings (and saw the Ken Burns documentary on public tv). I would also like to see Nynke and Becky again, and meet Bob and Laurent face to face.

I also want to check out the Arizona Biltmore hotel [probably on the Saturday after getting back from the Grand Canyon]-- unforuntately at $350/night for the cheapest rooms, I won't be staying there. Wright contributed to the architecture, though Abert Chase McArthur was the architect of record. <http://www.arizonabiltmore.com/>

I second/third/n'th the recommendation for the Taliesin tour. It's an amazing place. --DaveSmith

I have been to Taliesen, The Phoenix Botantical Gardens, The Grand Canyon and (north of Tuscon) Biosphere. I have enjoyed them ALL. (Not sure of the status of the Biosphere operation).

Taliesen will always be unique.

The Grand Canyon will always be awesome.

Nynke and I have a BOF planned for Monday nite in my room (which I expect to be #2001).

I have committments on Sunday and cannot commit to an excursion. :(

I look forward to meeting with you all. Perhaps we can spend time together during Post-AYEFridayDiversions.

I went to the desert botanical gardens last year. The heat was oppressive, but despite that, it was fascinating and worth the trip. Would be a good idea to bring a hat and a bottle of water. NaomiKarten 2002.10.30

Just thought of other diversions worth doing. North of Phoenix and south of Sedona are: Montezuma's Caves. Near here are (not remembering the site name exactly). an area of lava flows that dates back to the 900's and 1000's.

Montezuma's Caves are a cliff dwelling site. You enter the site through a museum and orientation display. You can walk to the cliffs and get a sense of the site and the culture/people who inhabited this site.

The lava flows are equally provocative. I remember doing this while traveling North from Phoenix. Don't remember how far this is. The lava flows are remarkable and seem as if they happened in near history. Not unlike looking at lava flows in Hawaii. However, these flows date to an earlier time (1000) and one when the people in North America were traveling South. I guess the dry climate of Arizona limited flora from finding a foothold on the hard ignious rock.
