WhatAreYourExpectationsLet us know your hopes and wishes, here. Hopes and wishes about what? -- JimBullock (2002.11.24) My hope and wish is that you will share with us your hopes and wishes that you feel are relevant to this space. BobKing 2002.11.25 Since I posted this a while back, it was hopes and wishes about the AYE 2002 conference. Since it is now planning time for 2003, you can put any hopes and wishes about AYE 2003 or any future AYE. Sorry for confusion, BeckyWinant 2002.12.06 It's time to open this discussion for 2003, since we're in the midst of planning. What kinds of things would you like to have happen at the conference? I would like a way for all of us to be together at some point during the conference. -- JohannaRothman 2002.12.18 Some way other than the opening dinner and lunch? Do you mean something like a general session? or do you have anything more specific in mind? I often think that I wish it lasted longer and / or happened more often. On bad days, I wish we could put the conference ( and a few extra people each) on a space ship and go somewhere else. (OK, so I am really tired of this contract.) SherryHeinze 2002.12.18 Sherry, I'm ready to go to space :-) --jr JR I like your idea of a whole-conference session. I think that Tuesday evening would be neat because everybody has had a chance to get around and is also feeling a little crunched from picking between great alternatives offered at the same time slot. Tuesday would be a great time to compare notes without all the packing and shuttle arrangements that are looming by closing on Wednesday. --BobLee 2002.12.18 I have two specific things in mind:
-- JohannaRothman 2002.12.19 1) I like the idea of Morning News. It feels to me like a little community meeting. 2) Maybe we can figure something out from doing the "tester dialogue" thingy about how to get eveyone (who wants to be there) into a room to create something. ED 121902 I love the idea of morning news too - but I am also not a morning person, so as close as possible to a beginning session, right before and enough time to get to the session you are going to. - Just not tooooo early! : ) And I also like the idea of one big general session to kick things off - I was suprised at the number of people also, at the closing, many I never say the other days. Thanks. By the way, even at my large company, I'm already approved to go again this year! Yeah! - Lynn Marie 1/24/03 Who would think that in March, I'd be a 'late contributor' to this site... or am I the first of the early contributors? or.... anyway, doesn't matter.... I also like the idea of another get together.... food (cheap snacks), drink (from the bar for free!), and music would be wonderful. Do we have to schedule a 'place' ahead of time? Like, maybe, the patio? Anyone know any good local music? (what kind? well, country isn't my favorite -- i'd vote for folk or irish, or not-to-loud old fashioned rock/dance music, or maybe even cowboy music (that would be something different -- yodeling! maybe we could get lessons in yodeling??? ok, I'm getting carried away.) Those are my thoughts.... I am looking forward to coming for my THIRD year! Love to all, Diane 3/24/03 You're not late, you're right on time. But some of us have been here for a while. I am very glad that you are coming back. SherryHeinze 2003.3.24 Ok, its months after the last submission - and it looks like I'm the first "new attendee" to contribute. I have many many career goals, immediate and longer term - and I'm hoping/expecting to get some skills that will help me move forward more effectively - at my current job, and forward from there. And, ideally, skills I could apply to other goals in my life - not related to my day job. But I'm not sure what I can reasonably expect - I've just heard many good reactions to this conference, so I'm going. -LoriHoward 2003.10.14 Thanks, Lori, for reawakening this page. If the past is any predictor, these are reasonable expectations. Put yourself into it, and you will get "yourself" out of it. I'll try to do my part, as will all the other hosts - and participants. - JerryWeinberg 2003.10.14 As last year, I'll be bringing my mandolin, and encourage players of Irish Traditional Music (or anything else, for that matter) to bring their instruments. There's an Irish session at pub not too far away from the hotel on Tuesday night. I can't speak to the usual quality of the session, since last year a prominent member of the Irish community died a couple of days beforehand, and not many were present at the pub--they were still at the wake. Still, it's usually a fun thing to do extracurricularly. Jerry--bring yer kazoo! [grin] -Michael B. 2003.10.14 You mean, bring your kazoo collection. And let's hear from everyone else who is BringingaMusicalInstrument. - Jerry I'll be the second "new attendee" to contribute. I'm hoping to to connect with people who see the QA/test world as I do, and create relationships so that we contact each other in the future when really tough problems arise. I'm also planning on listening and learning from others who approach challenges completely differently so I can expand my tool belt. Finally, I hope to have opportunities to have people critique my approaches and ideas in a manner that encourages me to think much more deeply about problems and much more creatively about solutions. (I had this kind of experience at an internal corporate leadership workshop, the end result was I took significant new risks with great results) DaveRabinek Dave, I think you were at one of Esther's and my management dialogue things at Star, yes? At AYE, you'll have your choice of discussion, a BOF to try some things, or to talk with a presenter/participants about what occurred in a session. JohannaRothman 2003.10.24 Greetings. I just registered for this conference, although I heard about it here in ABQ earlier in 2004 and am excited to be able to attend. What appealed to me about this conference is the diversity of topics and skills that will be covered. I do a lot of coaching work in my current position and am would like to learn from others to gain perspective outside of my own world that may be useful to others. Wearing multiple hats and helping to support positive change in my organization are two key themes I am dealing with and am learning to gain ideas from others about as to how they deal with this in their organizations. I like some of the ideas above regarding going somewhere to listen to music (I am really into jazz) and other opportunities to chat with folks informally. BethBarrett I'm a new attendee, a mostly lurking SHAPEr, and I've got fairly large ambitions for the conference. I'm wrestling with selecting sessions, as they're a bit distant from what I do now, and I'm uncertain about the direction I'm heading in. Plainly: I've been a developer for 20 years, and a consultant of some sort for the last 10, but I've got this feeling I should be doing something besides what I'm doing. I have a hunch that there are things I'm better suited for, and I'd like to explore the possibilities. Alternate phrasing: Some days I think I'm being paid too much to do what I do, and that's unfair to my clients. I think the conference, and especially hanging around with the conference attendees can shed light on where I am. More accurately, I'm hoping that the conference can help me sort out what I do well from what I should leave to others, to improve what I do well, to better manage what I don't do well, and to do a better job of both in the next 20 years. My goals for the conference:
Like I said, ambitious. I do have a hunch that this is a good place and a good time for this sort of work, even if I'm unlikely to figure it all out right away. The AYE organizers, presenters and attendees seem like a remarkable bunch of people, I'm really grateful that I'm able to sneak in! - PatrickMorrison For both Beth and Patrick, be sure to be there Sunday night for the opening dinner. Among other things, you'll get a chance to get more information on the sessions, to help you choose (though you can use the wiki to ask, too). And Patrick, you'll definitely get the autograph and at least the conference discount from Dorset. But, if you really are going to buy the whole set, I'll bring you one from my private collection and give you an even better price (and autographs). Let me know. - JerryWeinberg 2004.10.18 Thank you Jerry, I'll be at the tutorial and look forward to Sunday's dinner, and the ones that follow... and, yes, I will really buy the complete set, and yes, yes, I would be delighted to buy it directly from you. Thanks for the kind offer. Patrick Morrison Thank you. Anybody else? Jerry Yes, yes, yes! Jerry please bring me a set too to buy and have you autograph after you have gotten a chance to know me!! I am so looking forward to this. Regards, MarisaBurt Will do, Marisa. I especially like the requirement that I get to know you. - Jerry Great idea, Marisa, I'd like to make the same request! Jerry, I know you're a busy man, but I do hope to get to know you a bit, and that you get to know me a bit. Thanks for the opportunity. PatrickMorrison One of my expectations is high-speed Internet access available at the hotel. That still doesn't appear on the hotel's Web site (though it may be available at the hotel itself). Peculiar for a such big outfit in 2004; it's Embassy Suites; it's a Hilton. If it were close to a Starbucks, it wouldn't be an issue. :) MichaelBolton 2004-11-02 Does Starbucks have free WiFi access? I'm bringing my new Palm Pilot and I just managed to setup the email on it. I need a free WiFi hotspot reasonably close to the hotel... I'm new to WiFi, so I'd appreciate any advice people have. :-) SuePetersen 2004.11.02 I was concerned about internet access as well - I called the front desk and they confirmed that they do have high speed internet access available. ThomRossi 2004-11-03 The hotel tells me they have high-speed wired access in the rooms and wifi in the lobby. -- JohannaRothman 2004.11.03
