WhatPeriodicalsDoYouRead

What periodicals do you read to get information? This would include both technical and general reading. DonGray 2005.02.28

Nowadays, the most up-to-date information is on the web. I read many individual web-logs, and the following aggregators:

For example, the acronym REST has been showing up a lot in reference to web-applications. It seems that SOAP is already on its way out. Various blog entries eventually pointed me to

I've pretty much given up on periodicals as a content delivery mechanism. They tend to put too much emphasis on whichever vendor is footing the advertising bill, or they're months late to the discussion.

Paper, computer related:

  • ACM Queue, (A new one, and they've done surprisingly well.)
  • Communications of the ACM,

  • Better Software (formerly STQE),
  • Crosstalk,

Paper, other:

  • Scientific American,
  • Harvard Business Review,
  • Fast Company,
  • Business 2.0,
  • The Economist (occasionally)

Paper, sometimes interesting:

  • MIT Technology Review
  • Sloan Management Review
  • Various management or technology specific rags, depending on what I'm doing lately.

Electronic:

  • Most of the ones listed above. Artima is quite good.
  • Shape - I'm religious about this one.
  • AYE Conference Wiki - Ditto.
  • Bookshelved Wiki - Ditto.
  • "Uncle Bob" at Object Mentor.
  • "PragmaticProgrammer" site: both authors, whole site, wiki.
  • Hacknot - Contrarian SW Development.
  • TOC discussion list.
  • NewGrange list (associated with PM World Today)
  • Software MFA list. (Interesting POV).
  • Agile Databases list.
  • About 150 RSS feeds / blogs found by spidering links from people I respect. If you've been to AYE or posted on Shape and have a blog. Odds are I'm a subscriber.

I don't know all that much on my own, but I do read a lot. So I have lots of people to steal from.
