I'm an application developer at the Toronto office of a large Phoenix-based corporation.

I'm an active reader of and occasional contributor to the ShapeForum.

My MBTI is INTP.

It is the internet equivalent of a magpie's nest: filled with shiny objects collected without any understanding of their value.

2002

2002 is my first AYE conference. I attended PSL in Sep 2002. I've been on SHAPE for a couple of years.

At AYE, I'm looking forward to seeing PSL classmates and instructors again, meeting familiar names from SHAPE and everyone else.

A story about my last trip to Phoenix:

At the end of 1999, I and two co-workers went to our Phoenix headquarters for a week to launch the project am currently working on. I stayed over the weekend so that I could visit the Grand Canyon and Arcosanti. My co-workers decided to join me, and I changed my plans to go with their suggested activities. We went hiking around Sedona in the morning (very nice), then spent the rest of the day (4 or 5 hours) easing the rental car up the 8 miles of tortuously pot-holed Schnebly Hill Road out of Sedona back to the main highway. I never made it to either the Grand Canyon or Arcosanti.

That trip out of Sedona seems to have foreshadowed the future of the project. We're three years into what I thought would be a 1.5 to 2 year project, and it isn't finished yet.

Now I'm heading back to Phoenix via a different route (Jerry's books, SHAPE, PSL, AYE), not as part of my job. I hope to get to at least one of my original destinations this time (GrandCanyonExcursion maybe, depending on my flight out). It will be interesting to see what paths I take this time in Phoenix at AYE, and what paths I take after.

Summary of AYE 2002

The warmup tutorial was a good way to start the conference. I knew something about most of the models presented, but there were a few new ones.

I attended the following sessions:

I enjoyed the sessions with the simulations the most: the quality bead simulation in SessionTwo025 and the crossword process exercise in SessionTwo009. The Satir Coaching session, a "star" exercise, was an amazing thing to see put together and watch unfold.

Some of the sessions were not what I expected. In the "Self as Agent of Change" session, we did belly dancing and moving through the room in various fashions - a fun session. The "Implementing Technical Review" session ended up more as a "get advice from your peers" session, which was useful too.

Attended the BOFs, NoBirdsofaFeather and BbRrrBofResults, and Shape day ( ShapeDayNotes ) - all interesting.

Bought way too many books from Dorset House table, even after forcing myself to pick only a small fraction of the ones I wanted.

Didn't get to the Grand Canyon or Arcosanti this time, but I did visit TaliesinWest and Cosanti.

The most notable thing about the AYE conference is the people: bright, knowledgeable, interesting, wise. There is a real atmosphere of acceptance and respect for each other as individuals - a safe environment. You really get the sense that people are being themselves.

2003

Stephen,

Your notation on InformationMagnet suggests to me that you are coming to AYE 2003. Are you? If so, It will be good to see the brain again <vbg> -- CharlesAdams PSL 9/2002

Actually, I'm still using my 2002 registration to participate in the wiki. I haven't decided about AYE 2003 yet (strong P). If I do come, it will be at my own expense again. I enjoyed the conference last year, but right now I feel like I need reach some clearer understanding of why I'm at the conference in order to make the commitment. -- StephenNorrie 2003.05.01

I hope your path does lead to AYE. I think you would be a good addition to the conference. But we must follow where our heart leads. -- CharlesAdams 2003.05.02
