SuggestionsForOtherActivities

What other sorts of activities would enhance your AYE experience? A wiener roast? Flamenco dancing? A cruise? (in Phoenix?)

Ooooo, I wanna weiner roast! With roasted marshmallows falling off the sticks into the fire! :-)

Seriously, I'd be interested in a trip up to Sedona, either overnight or a (long) day trip. I'm thinking of taking a Pink Jeep Tour, or a long hike would be neat.

I usually like to come in early or stay over a couple of days, if anybody would like to join me.

And, of course, I'll be shopping. :-) Anybody who wants to look at Navajo jewelry is welcome to join me.

We might be able to get the hotel to provide materials for a weiner roast. Bob King's our logistics person for this year. Let's see if he takes the bait.

Maybe Shape Day (Thursday) could take place in Sedona? - JerryWeinberg 2003.06.11

I would be delighted to spend Shape Day in Sedona, hiking or touring. I really REALLY like the area.

--SuePetersen 2003.06.11

If we do marshmallows, we gotta get Jerry to show everyone how to do "chubby bunnies." Bob, can you make this happen? JohannaRothman 2003.06.29

The other AYE event I am hoping to see would be a large simulation. I would be particularly interested in something which has some hidden states. I am thinking of millitary war games where the generals not only have to deal with what goes on in the war room and all the interpersonal issues which go along with having group decisions but they are also playing with a complex computer simulation and may debate the significance of what they see as output. Dorner in "the logic of failure" does lots of work with these kinds of computer modeled simulations with human input and hiden states and hidden models of how variables in the simulation are connected..

I have been reading The book Don't shoot the Dog" by Karen Pryor She is an advocate of positive reinforcement training and has suggestions for parlor games to practice issues with positive feedback timing. Perhaps this would make a good session.

I can do a people training session, using clickers or treats - that was the session Dani offered two years ago, but allmost nobody came so she felt discouraged. - JerryWeinberg 2003.07.01
I like hot dogs and weiner roasts myself. I also love dogs, and since my wife won't be with me (not a fan of pets), it would be fun to learn some things about dog training. If Dani has any hints on how to change someone into a dog lover, I would love to hear them.

I will check into the weiner roast idea with the hotel. BobKing 2003.07.02

What constitutes a Weiner Roast? I remember that the hotel has a BBQ (Two years ago chicken was served and I remember it being cooked on the terrace, though I might be mistaken). If their chiefs cook up the dogs is that a roast or is the idea that we participate in the creation of dinner?

KenEstes 07/02/03

I would suggest for it to be a "hands-on" event we would have to roast ourselves. DonGray 2003.07.03

Other Activities --

I like the idea of touring the area - I don't know it that well. Sue, et al, let me know your plans -- or let's make plans. I could come a bit early, I think.

Another suggestion. I have recently begun to get involved in drumming circles. They are great fun... and I think I could lead one, with a little coaching before I came. For drums... well, lots of things work -- notebooks, books, pans, sliverware, as well as small, easily packed eggs (plastic, not real) and shakers. Another alternative... if the hotel will let us make noise, early!

November still seems so far away -- but I'm shocked it is July, so....

Two years ago, I didn't know how important "animal training" ("positive reinforcement training?") can be. I hope this or something like it could be offered again. I'm not really interested in chickens (other than in a good meal). How about something with a higher IQ, like dogs or people?

KeithRay 2003.07.04

The touring the area idea is one that I have thought about a bit. Would people be interested in doing that by foot? I know that there is a biking/hiking trail nearby (short driving distance) that might be a good hike. This would probably have to be done during the day and I am not sure if there would be enough interest in this to take people away from one of the six session times...BobKing 2003.07.08
Why during the day? It is a lot cooler at night, the sun sets fairly late -- and we can bring flashlights, if need be.... it might be a nice alternative for those of us who have already gone to the Frank Lloyd Wright house, if that is happening again this year.

In case you haven't guessed, the idea of hiking in the heat doesn't really appeal to me.... but hiking as the sun is setting sounds good to me.... DianeGibson 07/08/03

Thanks Diane for that reframe - can't say why I was stuck thinking that it needed to happen during the day...BobKing 2003.07.08
Bob, can we come up with someplace to have a group bonfire picnic one evening, instead of everyone scattering for dinner? I know there are lots of parks in Phoenix - including one inside the circle of the hotel. - JerryWeinberg 2003.07.08
I like the hiking in the evening idea very much, particularly if we could time it with sunset. I also like Jerry's picnic idea, though I would opt for a low cooking fire so I could make somemores. (Any excuse for eating chocolate.) -- MikeMelendez 2003.07.09
I will check on this and get back to you. BobKing 2003.07.09

Bob -- When you check, could you see if they can be vegetarian-friendly? Many campfire things aren't. Thanks. DaveSmith

yup. Bob

Can you put tufu on a spit over hot coals?

I hate to see vegetarian burgers and stuff wasted when no one (vegetarian or otherwise) eats it -- perhaps people can state what they want to eat?

KeithRay 2003.07.09

Hell, in Minnesota, we have mashed potatoes on a stick. Macaroni and cheese on a stick! Tofu should be no problem!

I just pruned out one side discussion I started due to lack of interest. I put most of the information about that subjet on my home page, incase you are looking for it. I do not want that subject detracting from the active conversation.

KenEstes 2003.07.10

That's very good wiki behavior, Ken, but I have a question. How can anything be a side discussion on a page that discusses mashed potatoes on a stick? - JerryWeinberg 2003.07.11
A couple of updates: the hotel is checking on whether we a fire pit for us to use on the hotel grounds is feasible. Failing that, I have also asked about the potential for some sort of catered weiner roast affair nearby.

And the hike, there is a city park not far - not walking distance, but I am sure that we could figure out transportation depending on interest - that has what sounds like interesting hikes. BobKing 2003.07.14

I have more info on a WeinerRoast that we could. I am interested in what you think of this. BobKing

Could happen. Take a look at ThursdayShapeSessionSignup - JerryWeinberg 2003.08/30
ZydecoDancing

Maybe mix it in with BringingaMusicalInstrument to make it an all-around music event? RickHower 2003.10.21

I'm starting to think vaguely about packing. I would love some sort of hike/serious walk. Are there people still interested? Should I pack boots? FionaCharles 21-Oct-2003
Hi, Fiona -

I would love a serious walk. I'm planning to pack my trail shoes.

Esther 10-22-03

If anyone is interested in chess... CharlesAdams 2003.10.22
Bring your GPS, and we'll combine a bit of walking with some GeoCaching. --DaveSmith
